How to Use Embossing Folders

Folders are made of hard plastic, and they have a front and a back side. One side of the folder has a raised design and the other side is depressed.

  1. Place your material, typically cardstock, over the raised side of your embossing folder and sandwich it with two cutting pads. Pads are the most essential cut/emboss accessory.
  2. Roll the sandwich through an embossing machine with compatible dimensions. The pressure that is applied causes the textured design to be pressed in to your material, leaving you with a stylish design embossed into your paper, cardstock, or other material.

Pro tip: use hand tools to remove your paper from your cutting pads. If you use your fingers, you may accidentally bend the edges of your paper.

Will My Folder Work with Any Machine?

For the most part, any embossing folder can be used with any standard machine. As far as width and length go, most folders are approximately 5" x 7" or 4" x 6" (A2). This means they will fit a standard size machine but there are bigger ones that can cover a whole 8.5" x 11" page. Most embossers can't handle that size, so be aware of all that before you make a purchase.

What Types of Material Can I Emboss?

Embossing is not just limited to paper; there are quite a few materials that you can emboss. Before embossing unfamiliar materials, be sure to read your machines user manual to find out what the maximum thickness is that is allowable. If your material is too thick, the embossing process can cause you machine to jam or even break. Some of the most commonly used material to emboss include:

  • Paper
  • Cardstock
  • Vellum
  • Tin
  • Metallic foil
  • Thin wood
