Making Paper Die Cuts and Embossing Patterns

For this process you will want to use the following sandwich - working from the bottom to the top:

  • A Plate
  • With die cutting side up
  • Cardstock
  • B Plate

If you are using a thin die, then make the following sandwich:

  • A Plate
  • C Plate
  • With die cutting side up
  • Cardstock
  • B Plate

Please note that about halfway through running a die shape in your Cuttlebug machine, you will hear a cracking noise. The cracking noise is perfectly normal and you haven't damaged your die cutting machine.

Along with the cracking noise, it is also normal to have cut marks on your B plates. In order for your die to cut all the way though your paper or other material the die has to have enough depth to go through your sheet. Consequently this creates the images marks on your plate. You don't have to worry about any etches in your plate, the die cutting plate will still work just the fine and you don't need to worry about replacing it just yet. If you do a lot of scrapbooks die cuts you will want to make sure you have an extra B plate in case it does crack. It's recommended that you flip the plate over throughout its lifetime in order to wear the plate out evenly.

In order to die cut shapes and emboss your material, you will have to put some pressure on the machine so that the die with cut and the pattern will emboss. With applying additional pressure you should still never have to struggle to turn the handle. If a sandwich feels too thick when you start running it through your die cutting machines, you should stop immediately. Roll the sandwich back to its starting point by turning the handle in the opposite direction. You will need to do this when the sandwich is configured incorrectly. Forcing a sandwich through the machine that is too thick could damage your die cutting machine.

What Makes the Die Combos So Unique?

For some of the die shapes you will need to cut your image and then line it up with the enclosed embossing die to add the detail to your die cut. In the case of the Disney characters, for example, you would cut out Mickey's head and then using the embossing folder would add the details of his face and ears. Some of the other Die Cutting/Embossing Combos we offer will coordinate the die shape with the embossing folder, such as the Poppies and Honeycomb Borders. You can cut out your poppy flowers and then emboss the flower part to give your flower some additional detail; however you don't have to add that the one that comes with the die. You can add whatever embossing pattern you like or just leave the cut flat.
