Crafts for Charity Organizations

by Nathan Baker

‘Tis the season of giving and we know plenty of generous crafters. Most people are willing to give, we just are all so busy. We get caught up in day to day life, and we often don’t find the time to seek out opportunities to give. That’s why we decided to give you a quick breakdown of some of our favorite causes. Research can take time, and this will ease that burden. If you like doing crafts for charity, then these will be matches made in heaven.

this beanie on a dog demonstrates anybody can make crafts for charity

Proof: my dog Laika wearing a homemade beanie by yours truly

Just as you’d suspect, there are different types of organizations with different needs. Before we get into that, I’d like to suggest visiting a nearby retirement home and having arts and crafts time there with the residents. Giving our time to those who need companionship is one of the most charitable and rewarding things we can do.
Making Crafts to Donate to Charity?
If you want to donate completed projects, then below are some fine options to consider. Our readers are typically machine crafters, and many of these charities are looking for crocheted and knitted goods, but we suspect that many of you have these skills in your arsenal! If you can believe it, even I know how to knit and purl.

We did think of one fun way for you to use your Cricut machines: if you’re planning on donating a  kid’s white t-shirt to a shelter, you might as well put a fun design on it first with Iron-on. I’m sure you have plenty of your own solutions for designs, but maybe try one of our free SVG files (download links located at the bottom of this post).

Without further ado, here are some great organizations: Continue reading “Crafts for Charity Organizations” »

December 2017 Free SVG Designs: Reindeer Layout SVG, Hanukkah Icons SVG’s

Well, it’s nearly December, which means we have free downloadable Christmas SVG designs for you to enjoy. We also included a few fun Hanukkah projects. We have plenty of different ideas to keep you busy this month, all courtesy of our designer Aaron Meyers. December downloads include: (1) scrapbook layout, (1) banner project, and (1) set of Hanukkah projects. The download links are at the bottom of the post.

In the event that you have never used an SVG file, they work with electronic craft cutting machines, like the CAMEO 3 and the Cricut Explore Air 2. It’s as simple as uploading the SVG file to your machine, loading the material, and then watch while machine does all the work.

Thanksgiving Craft Projects 2017

turkey trotters t-shirt thanksgiving craft projectby Richelle Naegle

Did you get a chance to see the Free SVG downloads from Aaron last week? If you haven’t, download them here. I loved his football jersey ideas and thought it would be fun to put my own twist on it for my Thanksgiving craft projects. We don’t play football in my family, but we do participate in a fun run every year. I decided to make t-shirts for our fun run this year. Aaron owed me a favor, so I asked him to make this fun Turkey Trotters design for us. I also did the Thanksgiving Tree project that Aaron designed.

Turkey Trotters Shirts

My boys were in my craft room looking at my fabric transfer paper and they found this Silhouette flocked brown heat transfer material. This gave the turkey fuzzy texture, which makes it a little more fun. For this shirt project, you need:

  • T-shirt(s)
  • Black, red, yellow, white and brown fabric transfer material
  • Your favorite electronic cutting machine
  • The free SVG file (download it at the bottom of this post)
  • Heat (I used the new Cricut EasyPress, it worked great)
  • Cricut BrightPad (optional, but really made weeding easier)
  • Weeding tool

Cut out the turkey and begin ironing/pressing it. I find it easier to cut out from the bottom layer first, so I cut black first and then the brown, and so on. That way when you’re done weeding the first color, you can immediately iron it on and you don’t have to worry about losing pieces or ruining while you’re working on the other cuts. I use this trick with paper as well. When you have many layers or colors to work with, this will streamline the process.

With the Cricut BrightPad, the lines show better so it makes it easy to see where you are weeding. Note: it didn’t work with the flocked material, I couldn’t see though it. The rest of the material worked really well.

Then using the EasyPress you just use it as you would a regular iron, except you don’t need to move it back and forth you can just hold it in place while it’s working. You can also use a regular household iron to transfer the material. The EasyPress just makes it easier. I added numbers on the back of the shirt just for fun and now we are ready for our run!

Thanksgiving Tree

thanksgiving tree craft project completedThe second Thanksgiving craft project I made was the Thanksgiving Tree. I thought it would be great to have it up for the month and everyday we can write what we are thankful for. By the end of the month, we will have a tree full of leaves and gratitude. I think this is a great way to remind us of all the things we are grateful for. Even my little boys are participating in this.

I cut the tree trunk out of brown vinyl and applied it to my wall and then cut the leaves out of colored cardstock. We then simply tape the leaf to the tree each day.

I think this is definitely a tradition that we will keep doing in our home.

Have you used any of our SVG files? Please share what you have created with us on social media. I would love to see what you are creating with them. Happy creating!

November 2017 Free SVG Designs: Thanksgiving T-Shirt SVG, Thanksgiving Decor SVG’s

Thanksgiving is one of our favorite times of year and we are celebrating it by expressing gratitude to our faithful customers with free SVG download designs. Our lead designer, Aaron Meyers, has some fresh new ideas for this fall holiday. He’s come up with (1) Thanksgiving football jersey project, and (1) Thanksgiving tree home decor project.

For the best results with heat transfer projects, try the new Cricut EasyPress machine.

In case you have never used an SVG file, they work with electronic die-cutters, like the Silhouette CAMEO 3 and the Explore Air 2. It’s as simple as uploading the file to your machine, loading the material, and then waiting as the machine quickly does all the work. Here are the designs (scroll to the bottom of the post for the download links):

design concept for turkey bowl football jerseys

Above is the design concept for our Turkey Bowl football jerseys. We made 4 team logos, numbers for the back of the jersey, and also 3 team names. We figure many of you will probably want to come up with your own names with your preferred font, but at least we gave you a few ideas for team monikers. These are broken up into 3 different SVG files that look like this:

turkey bowl jersey team logos concept

These designs are broken up into four downloadable files. From left to right and top-down, these are called Turkey Bowl Football LogoTurkey Bowl Trophy LogoTurkey Bowl Foam Finger Logo, and Turkey Bowl Pie Logo.

turkey bowl jersey team names concept

These are all found in one file called Turkey Bowl Jersey Phrases. These would typically go at the top of the front or the back of the jersey. To do it like the pros, put the team name on the front, then put last names above the numbers on the back.

And these are the Turkey Bowl Jersey Numbers. You’re going to need some material for this project, so save on heat transfer paper here at CraftDirect, and while you’re at it, take a gander at the helpful infographic we made in this how to use Iron-on tutorial.

thankful tree project concept

Last, but not least we have this interesting Thankful Tree project. It’s divided into two files: the Thankful Tree and the Thankful Tree Leaves. The vision here is that you would make the trunk and branches of the tree with vinyl and then make the leaves out of colored cardstock. You can write what you are thankful for on the backs of the leaves and then adhere them to the tree (check out Sticky Thumb for awesome glues and adhesives). It is one of Aaron’s family’s favorite Thanksgiving traditions, which they do at dinner. We thought it would also be fun to do it sort of like an advent calendar and have a family member add something they are thankful for, every day.

Enjoy Your Thanksgiving Projects

If you love these projects, please share this blog post with your friends on social media. How fun would it be to show up to your Turkey Bowl with both teams in matching jerseys! Start a new family tradition with your own Thankful Tree this year. It’s a great way to keep your November positive and focused on the great things in life.

Halloween Treat Bag Projects

two ghost-themed halloween treat boxesby Richelle Naegle

It’s time to get ready for Halloween, Everybody knows the best thing about Halloween is the treats! At least that’s what my kids tell me. So today, I thought it would be fun to make a few quick and easy Halloween treat bag projects.

Silhouette 3D Open-Sided Halloween Favor Box

For me, the first thing I did was get my Silhouette CAMEO (have you seen the new Pink CAMEO 3?) out and searched through their Silhouette Studio until I found these cute Ghost boxes. They are called 3D Open sided Halloween Favor Box.

I cut them out out at 11″ tall, which allowed me to cut two boxes from one 12″ x 12″ sheet of patterned cardstock. The banner spells “Boo”, but instead of O’s, I substituted googly eyes. I think that modification turned out great

September 2017 Free SVG Designs: Football Layout SVG, Cake Decor SVG

cake tabletop decor design completed project

September is almost here, which means it’s time for some free SVG design downloads. Aaron Meyers is the artist, and he has a few fun and original ideas for you to try with your favorite electronic cutting machine. There are (1) scrapbook layout, (3) emojis, and to celebrate the addition of The Sweet Tooth Fairy to our website, Aaron made (1) tabletop cake decoration.

In order to download the free files, scroll to the bottom of this blog post and click the link. If you do not see the files, it is because you are reading the post in the blog feed. Click on the title to reveal the entirety of the post. Upload the file to your machine so that you can cut your patterned paper with it.

The paper pastry design is called Cake Tabletop Decor. Richelle made it with the new Cricut Maker machine. When cutting this project, you want to choose a sturdy material for the foundation. She used kraft board from the Cricut Kraft Board Sampler for the legs and the backing. The flame is from the Cricut Felt Sampler, and the rest is constructed from colored cardstock.

We don’t have completed projects for the other designs, but we do have concept images of what they will look like:

Mini Halloween Things Projects – Tim Holtz 2017

cards made with Mini Halloween Things Thinlits diesby Richelle Naegle

I’m sure you have seen my posts for the New Tim Holtz Halloween Dies. 2017 Sizzix Halloween Dies is a great year for Halloween Dies!! Oh my these are all so amazing!  Okay so I finally got my hands on a couple of them, because they are literally flying off the shelves. I would highly recommend pre-ordering them if you want them, they seem to go out of stock as soon as they arrive.

The reason I decided to make Mini Halloween Things projects is I think this may be my favorite die set from 2017, I love the Mini Halloween Things Thinlits. They are perfect for making fun little cards to go with treats, or create quick tags, or add an embellishment to a photo frame. If you are like me and you enjoy giving away treats to friends around Halloween, you can add a quick note with a fun die-cut piece using this die set. and want to add a cute little note to them these would make a perfect embellishment to a gift tag.
